1、 Requirements for adjacent areas of escalators and moving walkways

At the entrances and exits of escalators and moving walkways, there should be sufficient unobstructed areas to accommodate passengers. The width of the unobstructed area should be at least equal to the distance between the centerline of the handrail, and its depth should be at least 2.5m from the turning end of the handrail. If the width of the area increases to more than twice the center distance of the handrail, its depth dimension is allowed to be reduced to 2m.

The vertical net height above the steps of an escalator or the treads or tape of a moving walkway should not be less than 2.3m. If obstacles in buildings can cause personal injury, corresponding preventive measures should be taken. Especially at the intersection with the floor slab and between the escalators or moving walkways set at each intersection, a vertical anti-collision barrier without sharp edges should be installed above the outer cover plate, and its height should not be less than 0.3m. (Except when the distance between the centerline of the handrail and any obstacle is not less than 0.5m)

The horizontal distance between the outer edge of the handrail and the wall or other obstacles shall not be less than 80mm in any case, and this distance shall be maintained at a height of at least 2.1m above the escalator steps and the treads or tape of the moving walkway. For escalators that are adjacent, parallel or intersecting, the distance between the outer edges of the handrail should be at least 120mm.

2、 Space for machine rooms, drive and steering stations

There should be a large area and space for people without fixed equipment in the machine room and steering station. The area of this open space should be at least 0.3m2, and the length of the smaller side should not be less than 0.5m.

When the main drive device or brake is installed between the passenger carrying branch and the return branch of the steps, pedals, or tape, an appropriate nearly horizontal platform should be provided in the working section, with an area of not less than 0.12m2 and a small edge size of not less than 0.3m.

The space in front of the separation machine room, drive and steering stations, and fixed control panels (cabinets) should allow maintenance personnel to easily and safely access the equipment and electrical connections. The specific requirements for these spaces are as follows:

a. There should be a free space in the front area of the control panel (cabinet) with a width of less than 0.5m (according to the requirement of 0.5m), with a depth of 0.8m;

b. There should be a bottom area of at least 0.5m where maintenance and inspection of moving parts are required × 0.6m free space;

c. The width of the passage leading to these free spaces is at least 0.5m, and in areas without moving parts, the passage width is allowed to be reduced to 0.4m.

3、 Lighting

There should be appropriate lighting near the comb board for escalators or moving walkways and their surroundings. Lighting is allowed to be installed in the surrounding space or on the equipment itself. The illumination at the entrance and exit, including the comb plate, is consistent with the required illumination in that area. The illumination at the entrance and exit of indoor or outdoor escalators and moving walkways shall be at least 50LX or 15LX, respectively.
